Lovefilm eyes console movie streaming

Lovefilm eyes console movie streaming: "

Exclusive: Lovefilm may be rolling out on Sony and Samsung TVs, but the DVD rental service has been conspicuously absent on consoles so far, while Netflix happily streams blockbuster titles to the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii in the US. That could change soon though: a top exec at the UK company says it’s “excited” about what the latest generation of consoles can do. So excited, it’s got a Nintendo Wii in the office. What ever for?

We asked Lovefilm’s chief marketing officer, Simon Morris, whether the company plans to offer movie streaming to subscribers on consoles as well as TVs and Blu-ray players, and while he couldn’t confirm anything, he said the Lovefilm team are “excited about the options that games platforms allow…we want to get on as many platforms as possible.”

That’s promising enough on its own, but we’ve got more reason to suspect Lovefilm is serious about this. On a visit to the company’s HQ in west London today, we spotted a Wii in a demonstration room, badged up with the company’s logo on the side.

Morris wouldn’t confirm if the company had a Lovefilm channel running on it, but it’s a tantalising glimpse of what might be in the pipeline nonetheless. We’d love to see Lovefilm on the Wii: while the PS3 and Xbox 360 both offer well stocked rental services already, right now the only top notch video on demand Wii owners can access in the UK is BBC iPlayer.

We’ll be keeping close tabs on this for you, so stay tuned, and try not to act too surprised if Lovefilm makes an announcement sometime soon.
