The Buffalo Dualie takes two of the most ubiquitous items around -- namely iPod and HDD docks -- and does the inevitable by splicing them into one device. You should already be familiar with it from our CES coverage, but just to refresh your memory this is a dual-purpose docking station, accepting hard drives and iDevices of most colors and creeds. It comes bundled with a swish-looking 500GB storage drive, and we hear Buffalo is pretty cheerful about satisfying Apple's stringent standards to make this an Apple Store exclusive. Yep, that means you can only buy this direct from Apple, but if you've already tasted the forbidden fruit once to get your iPod or iPhone, another bite shouldn't really hurt, should it?

For those of you that haven't heard me tell the beginning of this story on the TUAW talkcast, you might recall that my dad the switcher upgraded his Mac mini to a sweet new Mac Pro. So what could I do with an extra Mac mini? Maybe a server? Maybe a doorstop?

I know! A media center!

I had cable service, a DVD player, and a TiVo Series 2. My goal was to combine all of those things into one set-top-box -- the Mac mini -- and maybe even unsubscribe from some of the monthly services.

After I bought the Mac mini from my dad (the switcher), I hooked it up to my old, standard-definition TV. The Mac mini Media Center -- M³C for short -- was born.

The video experience was sub-optimal, owing mostly to my 10-year-old CRT that occasionally turned black-and-white (or lost video altogether). I knew it was time for a new TV. I promised myself that as a reward for finishing a series of challenging home improvement projects (replacing a bathroom sink and installing new floors, to name two) I would get myself the high-definition TV I always wanted.

That TV arrived on Wednesday. Now, I can share with you how to set up the easiest, most awesome M³C of your own -- for less money than you think.

Boing Boing's gadget blog has updated the list of potential hackintosh netbooks. You can ponder the whole thing or cut to the chase: '...get a HP Mini 1000 or a Dell Mini 9/Vostro A90.' While the Mini 9 has been discontinued, the Vostro A90 is apparently a rebadged version of the highly hackable Dell and it works just as well as the original.

The Eee 1000H also scored highly. There are 21 machines on the chart, each scored across 10 items like working Wi-Fi, Ethernet, sound board and so on.

Our own Steven Sande wrote about his experiences with turning a Dell Mini 9 into a hackintosh. His experience was less than optimal, but your own may differ (those Windows and Intel stickers sure do look sweet).

In related news, the fabled and still non-existent 'iTablet' is rumored to be coming this year or next, depending on whom you choose to believe. As for me, I'd be happy enough to pick up a 13' MacBook Pro and call it a day. It's small enough for a daily ride in my backpack and is a genuine Mac. But as my hacker friends would say, 'Where's the fun in that?'
