Disable the Mini Toolbar and Live Preview in Word 2010 or 2007

Disable the Mini Toolbar and Live Preview in Word 2010 or 2007: "

A couple of enhancements in Word 2010 & 2007 is the Mini Toolbar and Live Preview features. While these enhancements are welcome by some, other users may find them annoying. Here is how to turn both features off.

Mini Toolbar and Live Preview Features

The Mini Toolbar pops up when you select text in a document. It allows you to change fonts, underline, bold, italicize the selection and more.

sshot-2010-08-14-[02-14-33]

Live Preview allows you to hover the mouse over different style types and instantly show you how the document will look with the changes.

Disable Mini Toolbar and Live Preview in Word 2010

If you are annoyed by the Mini Toolbar and / or Live Preview while creating documents, we can easily disable one or both. In your Word document click the File tab to access Backstage View and click Options.

sshot-2010-08-14-[02-20-01]

Click General and under User Interface Options uncheck either Show Mini Toolbar on selection, Enable Live Preview or both then click OK.

You don’t need to restart Word, the features will be disabled right away. Now when you highlight text, no annoying Mini Toolbar…

And when choosing different Style Sets or other configurations of the document it will no longer show you how it will look with Live Preview.

Word 2007

You can disable both features in Word 2007 as well. Click on the Office Button the Word Options.

Under the Popular section just uncheck the Mini Toolbar and Live Preview boxes.

If you’re moving from Office 2003 to a newer version, you might find the new features to be quite handy, on the other hand, you might find them very annoying. If so you can easily turn them off, or if you want to use the features again, just go back and re-enable them.

i(Pad) of the Tiger

i(Pad) of the Tiger: "

This is great! Photographer Jordan Hollender and musician Scott Harris put together this music video that covers Survivor's classic anthem and uses only iPad apps as instruments. The video itself was recorded with a couple of Canon HDSLR video cameras, but as you can see in the embedded version above, all of the music is created with iPad apps. Unfortunately, they don't identify the apps used, but that sounds like a great job for you TUAW commenters. I think I saw Pianolo HD being played on the floor there, and Pocket Drums is being used as percussion, but I couldn't find the guitar app or the DJ app that they are using.

Of course, what I really want to know is where he got that sweet lightning bolt iPad strap. The video's great, though. Apparently it was all lit in one day and shot in another. There's no word on how long it took to make the song, but with the iPad involved, it was probably both magical and revolutionary.

(Thanks, Rachel!)

8 Tips On How to Photograph Sports

8 Tips On How to Photograph Sports: "

A Guest Post by Pamela Aurino.

1) Camera Settings – Burst mode, Focal Points & Aperture Priority

sports-photography.JPGWhen shooting any sports, make sure your camera is set to burst/continuous mode to keep up with movements of the players. This will save you having to press the button manually for every shot. Have your camera’s focus mode to AI servo mode which is made to shoot continuous movement & for panning.

Also ensuring all your focal points are active will make sure you have optimum chance of focusing on the player with the ball. When shooting sports it is ok to have the camera in Aperture Priority mode as we’re dealing with a really fast game and you need to be on the ball with exposure rather than having to always toggle the shutter speed manually.

2) Camera Settings – Shoot in JPG!

I personally shoot in jpg as opposed to RAW. When you’re taking so many continuous shots you’re going to want a maximum buffer speed. You’ll find when shooting soccer / netball tournaments, the parents buying the shots aren’t going to be too fussed on quality of the image as long as you captured something at the right time. A sporting tournament can get quite messy when you’re coming out and back off the field to download CF cards and you’re having to wait for the raw files to download.

3) Lens settings – 2.8 Is Almost An Essential!

You’re going to need a fast telephoto zoom lens when photographing sports. I shoot with a Canon 70-200 f/4 IS USM and I love it! Although indoor sports photography like bowling may require a 2.8 lens as you get another full stop of light in.

4) Lens settings – Image Stabiliser & Focus Mode

An absolute MUST when photographing sports photography is to have IS on your lens. You want to set your lens to Image Stabiliser Mode 2. Mode 1 is only made for still subjects & portraiture and won’t perform as well as the panning mode 2 in sporting situations.

Have your focusing distance range set to 3m to Infinity mode instead of 1.2m to Infinity. This will make sure you have the fastest focusing possible.

5) Note The Time of Day

sports-photography-tips.JPGSoccer games usually run in the morning so if you’re aiming to sell prints after the game of the individual players be sure to spread out the range of players shot. There are certain players who like to step back more than others but it’s your responsibility as the photographer to record everyone and to maximise your profits.

Take note of where the sun is and make sure the sun is to your back when shooting. This will ensure you have your shutter speed on it’s maximum without having to worry about exposing for the faces of the players if you were shooting into the sun. I am willing to sacrifice a little squinting and panda eyes from the players to ensure I get the right exposure. After all if you don’t nail that exposure no one is going to care about panda eyes because there won’t be a shot.

Concentrate on shooting one team for the first half as they will be in the right position with the sun illuminating their fronts/faces. Then when half time is over aim to shoot all the players on the other team as they would have switched sides on the field.

6) No Eyes! No Shot!

When photographing sports, the key rule is to include the eyes of the subject and you can never fail. If you’re shooting the back of a player, STOP! ..Wait for them to turn around (or turn to another player on the field) ..and shoot when you have their eyes in the shot. The best shots in soccer are the headers and knee shots, as their eye level will typically be above parallel to the ground which is what we want. Whatever you do, don’t forget to photograph the goal keeper! He/she doesn’t have much interaction with the entire game, but the anticipation shots in between can still make great shots.

7) Include The Ball!

The eyes and the ball are two of the most important compositional elements in a shot. Then to add to the shot is the expression in the players face.

Although it can be difficult to capture, parents of the players are more likely to buy a picture that includes the game ball in it.

8) Wear an Official Photographer Vest!

Make sure you wear a big yellow/orange vest to indicate to people you are the official sports photographer. A photographer in Wollongong, NSW taped a sign on his back saying ‘Request A Shot!’ and at least that indicates to them that they are welcome to pull you aside. If you are more open to people nagging you, (yes it will be a little annoying having to be pulled aside with parents saying ‘look out for my son, number 12!’) the more sales you will make from prints.

Integrate an iPad with WHS

Integrate an iPad with WHS: "

Tech lover Chris Oldroyd explains how to uses AirVideo with his iPad and Windows Home Server.

Chris describes AirVideo as the best application he has ever bought for the iPhone and iPad and describes how it helps integrate his iPad with his home entertainment setup. By installing the small server application directly on Windows Home Server and the Apple app store app AirVideo on either an iPod or iPhone you can have video streaming from WHS to either of these devices when you are out or about.

Access All Your Google Accounts at the Same Time With Multiple Sign-in

Access All Your Google Accounts at the Same Time With Multiple Sign-in: "

Would you like to easily access all of your Google accounts without using multiple browsers or special addons? Here’s how you can use the new Google Multiple Sign-in feature to quickly access all your accounts.

Google services permeate most of our online lives, and many of us end up using multiple Google accounts for different projects. You may have a personal Gmail account, a specialized one for your website, and another for using on public forums and comments. Before, the only way to access all the accounts would be to use multiple browsers or to use special extensions to sign in to multiple accounts at the same time. Now Google has made it easy to link all of your Google accounts so you can access them directly in the same browser.

Add Multiple Sign-in to Your Google Account

When you access any Google service, such as Docs or Gmail, you’ll see your Gmail address in the top right corner. To add multiple accounts, we’ll need to edit our Google account.

image

Head over to Google.com/accounts (link below), and sign in with your main, standard Google account. Make sure you use your primary account, as this will stay the main one you’ll see when you access Google services.

sshot-2010-08-09-[33]

Click Edit beside Multiple sign-in under the Personal Settings section.

SNAGHTML715369

Select the On – Use Multiple Google Accounts in the same browser, and check each box to show you understand the limitations and features of Multiple Sign-in. Not all of the Google apps currently support it, but most of the main ones such as Gmail and Docs work great with it. Click Save at the bottom when you’re done.

image

You’ll now see a confirmation in the top of the page. Click the Back link to go back to your Accounts settings page.

image

You should now see a down arrow beside your Google account. Click it, and then click Sign in to another account to add another account.

image

Sign in with the other Google account you wish to add in the login box.

image

Now you’ll see your second Google account when you click the down arrow beside your email address. Your first, main account will be listed in bold as Default. Click the other email address to switch to that account.

SNAGHTML7639bf

If you’d like to add another Google account, simply click the Sign in to another account link again to add it.

Remove a Linked Account

Would you like to remove the extra accounts you added? Unfortunately there isn’t currently a way to remove just one linked account, so you’ll need to turn off Multiple sign-in to remove the accounts. To do that, login to your Google Accounts page as before, and click Edit beside Multiple sign-in.

image

Click the Off bullet near the bottom, and click Save.

image

Once you’ve saved the changes, you’ll only have access to your main Google account. If you ever decide you’d like to add the second account again, repeat the steps above. Note that this fully removes the data about your second account from the first account, which is great if you accidently added your account to the wrong Google login.

Conclusion

Whether you have multiple personal Gmail accounts or use one for business and one for personal use, this is a great way to keep your accounts together. Unfortunately you cannot access your Google Apps accounts this way, though you can already be logged in to a Google Apps account and a standard Gmail account at the same time. Google Apps account support will be added to this eventually, but for now, it’s a great solution for accessing any of your standard Google accounts without logging off and on or using workarounds.

If you’d like to send and receive email from other email accounts, including Hotmail accounts, inside Gmail, here’s an article on How to Add Pop3 Email Accounts to Gmail.

Google multiple account sign in finally available

Google multiple account sign in finally available: "

Google will soon be rolling out the capability to sign in to multiple accounts via the same browser. This is undeniably good news for those of us with partners who share our laptop, who have work and personal email accounts, and, of course, those of us who got fed up of Google alerts clogging up our inboxes and built a separate email address for them…

We’re not one of the lucky ones to be able to use the new feature, but we’re assured it’s being rolled out bit by bit as we speak.

Check Out Our Most Recommended

Currently it will only work for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites, Google Reader, Google Voice, App Engine and Google Code. Google Docs capability will soon follow. When the multiple sign in is enabled the accounts are accessed through a drop down menu in the top right of the page.

Theres some niggles for Google to iron out yet though, namely, that it’s not available on mobile devices, it doesn’t like offline mode, and the Google Calendar doesn’t work properly. Nevertheless, it’s a boon for those of us having to go the long way round to check two accounts at once.

Relieved? Tell us about it…
