Vodafone enlists Twitter users to build coverage map

Vodafone enlists Twitter users to build coverage map: "

Twitter users can now help build a real time map of Vodafone’s network coverage by tweeting their mobile phone’s current signal strength and location. Read on for the full lowdown on Vodafone’s user-generated coverage map.

If you’re a Vodafone customer and Twitter user you can contribute to the coverage map by tweeting the hashtag #vodafonesignal then following it up with your location (address or GPS coordinates), the type of connection you’re using (3G, EDGE or GPRS), the number of bars on your signal strength meter, whether you’re indoors or outdoors and which model handset you’re using.

Non-tweeters can contribute by adding a similar signal report to the “Not On Twitter?” section of the online Vodafone UK Signal Map. This map will be updated live to give a picture of the current state of Vodafone’s coverage, so you should know where to expect a good signal – and where to expect a whole heap of slowness.

Vodafone has released a video to demonstrate exactly what you need to do if you want to contribute:

Ventilating a Windows Home Server Cabinet on a Friday night – Video Edition

Ventilating a Windows Home Server Cabinet on a Friday night – Video Edition: "

I had a plain and ugly server cabinet on Thursday. With a trip to Ikea and the Cooler Guys, I am now the owner of a sweet, well ventilated, wife-accepted server storage facility. This is not a rack or a case. If the cabinet door in your living room is propped open then this article is for you too. Read on to see what I ended up creating…

Happy HP MediaSmart Server

Background

Last year I spent about $300 creating a Home Depot bought modular closet rack. Now I must say, with clothes and stuff on it I am sure it makes a clean set up, but for technology it just never looked good. It was functional but never really fit with the room. Since my wife and I just installed new bamboo floors, and remodeled the office, it had to go.

But what was I to replace it with? Anything with doors would get hot.

I have an Ikea, I mean Idea…

Old WHS Closet

Equipment Needed

Cabcool 802U Dual 80mm USB Powered Cabinet Cooling Kit

Ikea Bookcase

Six Beers (Optional as always)

Some wood and cheapie air register grill (if you want to attempt an attic vent)

The Cooler Guys

I usually do not endorse any one specific website but after looking around I found only one reliable location for USB fans and cabinet ventilation. I bought all of my own equipment and am not affiliated with this website in any way. That being said, they have some GREAT stuff. They are in Washington and delivery only took a few days.

http://www.coolerguys.com/

They have more than just cabinet equipment. Check them out. You will end up buying something from them!

Cooler Guys

The kit I bought was $24.95. That is way cheap and easy for this kit!

USB Powered Cabinet Cooling Kit

Directly from their website:

Cooling Unit includes the following:

All necessary screws, cables, and fasteners to complete the unit are included

Fan Specifications:

Dimensions: 80×80x25mm

Rated Voltage: 5 Volts

Connector: USB

Tail: 16 inch /Dual

RPM: 1500 +/- 10%

CFM: 20

dB: 19.7

Bearing: Sleeve

MTFB: 30,000 hrs

The Installation

Let me start by saying that unless you do a “built-in” you do not have to worry about ventilation or hoses. Just buy the kit and cut out the back part of your cabinet.

I am pretty sure I went overboard on the ventilation in this project but it was really fun. Those hoses (shown below) weigh only a few ounces and the vent to the attic only cost me about $5 in wood and $6 for the vent grill.

WTH?

This might look a little ugly. Ok it is. But that 2×4 is just a sideways “u” that the cabinet bolts to. Since the closet is 10 inches deeper than the bookcase I needed a secure mount for the Ikea bookcase. In addition, since there is 10 inches of space (depth) I had room for my D-Link switch, cabling, LED lighting, hoses and my waterproof USB safe that I use for WHS backups.

To turn the space back into a closet I just slide the cabinet out (it is on casters) and remove the 2×4. I even left the closet door railing on the top so I could put the doors back in. The only real damage I did was in the ceiling and I can just patch it and popcorn it if I ever move.

Behind the Bookcase

I needed my vent to rise about the cellulose insulation. That is alarm company wiring btw!Attic Vent

Cabinet Installation Video

Lets see some video!

Final Product

I was very impressed with the results. Once I finished the molding it brought the whole unit into a whole new look.

BEFORE and AFTER

BEFORE AFTER

How Does It Vent?

Since it is Ikea furniture, the doors do not close with any good tolerances so there is plenty of space for fresh air to get in at the bottom. If you have a sealed cabinet you could just add a vent for intake. Remember that heat rises so place the fresh air vent as low as practical.

And finally…

Thank you to my wife. She was very supportive of this project and helped with most of the job. I gave her the right side of the cabinet. I am sure girl-stuff will go in there. It is all about balance.

So pretty...

Mental Note: It sure reduces the server noise. Those Black Caviar drives I recommended and purchased perform great but sure make a lot of noise! The doors block all of the sound!

The whole project was about $360 with $50 being for the hoses and the attic vent thing. If you already have an existing cabinet (it is the one in your living room with the door propped open) then just get the $25 cabinet kit.

My EX485 looks so happy. I do too.

Happy HP MediaSmart Server

See you you next Friday night,

Timothy Daleo

O2 phasing out unlimited data in time for iPhone 4

O2 phasing out unlimited data in time for iPhone 4: "

O2 has just introduced a new mobile data model – and it seems the company is dropping its unlimited data plans – apparently in preparation for the launch of the iPhone 4.

From 24 June (which is iPhone 4 launch day, coincidentally), O2 will offer a trio of inclusive data bundles for new and upgrading customers. For example, if you sign up to a new 24-month smartphone contract at £25 per month, you’ll get 500MB of data per month. £40 per month will get you a 750MB data allowance, while you’ll need to be on a massive £60 per month tariff to get 1GB. There are no longer any unlimited data plans available.

Existing unlimited data customers sticking to their current plan will still receive the same service as they do now, at least until 1 October. They’ll then be able to buy O2 Bolt Ons which include 500MB of data for £5, or 1GB for £10. Of course, these customers won’t be able to use their existing SIMs in a new iPhone 4.

So, yes, if you do get your iPhone 4 through O2 you’re not going to have an unlimited data plan. We asked the company if the decision was due to the arrival of Apple’s new mobile, but a spokesperson referred us to the statement in the press release citing “more transparent pricing” as the cause. But it does seem like one heck of a coincidence.

O2’s press release also points out that 500MB of data is 2.5 times that used by the average customer, and that the dropping of unlimited data bundles would leave 97 percent of its customers unaffected, based on current usage patterns.

Simple way to fix that broken Ethernet cable

Simple way to fix that broken Ethernet cable: "

Chances are you’ve come across an Ethernet cable where the small plastic tab that holds the plug in place has broken off. We have a crimper on hand and usually just throw on a new RJ45 connector but [Laxap] found a simple alternative to fix Ethernet plugs. By using a couple of correctly sized cable ties you can secure the damaged connector without replacement. The boxy locking mechanism on the end of the cable tie is used as the catch, slimmed down with the help of an X-Acto knife or razor blade. Once you’ve got the right fit, use a second cable tie to secure it to the Ethernet cable. Simple is brilliant.

iPhone 4 guide: preview, pricing, availability

iPhone 4 guide: preview, pricing, availability: "

In a lot of ways, Apple's iPhone 4 announcement was short on surprises. We've been playing with the new iPhone OS 4 (now dubbed iOS 4) for a while, and photos of the hardware had been widely disseminated, a rarity for an unreleased Apple product. Still, Apple managed to fill in the gaps and build up the hype, and there's plenty to know about this handset that extends beyond what you can glean from bricked hardware of dubious provenance. Follow along with us as we break it all down, including detailed impressions from our hands-on time with the device.

Driver updates for charging iPad on PCs

Driver updates for charging iPad on PCs: "

Filed under:

If you're one of the many iPad customers having issues with charging, there may be relief in sight. A few popular PC motherboard manufacturers have released new drivers for their mobos that supposedly enable (or help with) iPad charging. If you have an ASUS, Gigabyte, or MSI motherboard, you can try hitting those links, downloading and installing the new drivers, and see if that helps. Unfortunately, this is still a YMMV situation -- there are a ton of different factors that go into the kind of power that can come off of a USB port, and even if you have the right software for the right motherboard manufacturer, there's no guarantee it'll work exactly right.

Still, if you've been craving a little extra power while charging your iPad on a PC, and know your way around a motherboard software update (which can be quite a task in itself, let me tell you from experience), attempting an update might be worth it. If you get it working and see an improvement in your iPad's charging capability, be sure to let us know in the comments.
